David Muzzey's American History is a vintage high school textbook originally published in 1911 with updated editions through 1929. This edition is a revised edition from 1923 that covers the Great War and the Wilson Administration. This textbook remains valuable as a narrative of American history before the ideological influences of the mid 20th century academy. Muzzey focuses on American leadership, circumstances, and consequential choices made in the history of our country while framing the particular circumstances of those choices. He offers analysis and opinion, but his own political concerns are far enough removed from our own that they are uniquely refreshing, respectful, and constructive. Muzzey illustrates the Western, European origins of the American identity and institutions in a time where these aspects were taken for granted and not controversial.
