Alfred J. Church (1829-1912) was an English scholar and writer known for his adaptations of classical literature for younger readers. Educated at Oxford and later a schoolmaster, Church devoted much of his career to retelling Greek and Roman classics in clear and engaging prose. His works-including Stories from Homer, Stories from Virgil, and many other classical retellings-introduced generations of readers to the great literature of the ancient world.
