In this work, Samuel Walker details the history of the rise of rights in American society, from the birth of the civil rights movement to today, and provides a spirited defence of its success in actually enlarging and enriching our sense of community in the USA.

Walker offers a vigorous defense of the rise of personal rights in America, conceding that the expansion of individual rights does present problems, but insisting that the gains far outweigh the losses.
